Adult NFR-CRS

The Adult National Fatality Review – NFR-CRS is for local, state, and tribal teams who analyze the circumstances of premature adult deaths. Teams can enter data into this database and use it to generate, summarize, and share insights to prevent premature adult deaths.

When adults die years before expected, the loss affects not only their loved ones but also undermines our collective civic, social, and psychological wellbeing. When local, state, and tribal teams review the chain of events leading to deaths, communities can take action to prevent and reduce foreseeable risks. For every adult to have a full and fair chance at a long, healthy life, it’s important to address negative life experiences, adverse living conditions, and other preventable factors that contribute to premature death.

To strengthen our collective capacity to unlock lessons from preventable deaths the National Center developed the first U.S. national database of circumstances of unexpected and early adult deaths. Epidemiologists and other researchers can access this database to generate, summarize, and share insights to prevent deaths in the earliest stages of life and make communities safer.

This one-of-a-kind system launched in Spring 2025. Stay tuned as we develop more resources to support users. If you have questions or need further assistance please contact us.

How it works

The Adult National Fatality Review – Case Reporting System (Adult NFR-CRS) is the first national US data system for compiling, analyzing, and learning from circumstances of unexpected, early adult death. This one-of-a-kind system gives researchers tools to check data quality, run analyses, generate reports, and more.

How we help

The National Center provides the data infrastructure and practical support fatality review teams need to uncover patterns in preventable deaths and to promote safety and wellbeing. We’re here to help epidemiologists, researchers, fatality review teams, and coordinators who study preventable adult deaths. To do this:

  • We built and maintain the first national U.S. data system for compiling, analyzing, and learning from circumstances of unexpected or early adult death. This one-of-a-kind system gives researchers tools to check data quality, run analyses, generate reports, and more.
  • We offer practical training, technical assistance, and “help desk” support for researchers who are getting started or want to learn the latest methods for data analysis, data visualization, or reporting.
