Deaths of children due to asthma in the U.S. are rare with approximately 155 deaths/year. But because so many of these deaths are preventable, fatality review data provide a unique perspective to better understand these deaths’ circumstances. From 2005-2017, fatality teams reviewed deaths of 744 children ages 0-17 who died due to asthma.

Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is a term used to describe the sudden and unexpected death of an infant less than 1 year old in which the cause of death is not immediately apparent. Approximately 3,500 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly each year in the US. From 2004 to 2019, fatality teams in 42 states reviewed 28,110 SUIDs that occurred while the infant was sleeping or in a sleep environment.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated its policy recommendations for reducing infant deaths in the sleep environment. Key recommendations on breastfeeding, sleep surface, and sleep location are summarized in this Quick-Look.

The NFR-CRS asks child death review (CDR) teams to determine if deaths that occurred starting in 2020 were directly or indirectly related to COVID-19 or the associated response to the pandemic. The deaths in the Quick-Look occurred between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2022.

The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention collects information about children who died with the incident location being a school in the National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System (NFR-CRS). From 2005 through 2019, fatality teams reviewed deaths of 439 school children ages 5-19 who died from an incident on school property on a weekday.

Between 2004-2020, child death review teams reviewed deaths of 478 youth younger than age 18 who died on a farm in a rural or frontier geographical area.

From 2004-2020, fatality review teams reviewed 3,030 deaths from poisoning, overdose, or acute intoxication for those ages 1-17 years old.

The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention collects information about opioid-related deaths in the National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System (NFR-CRS). From 20018 through 2022, fatality review teams reviewed 985 deaths from opioid ingestion for those ages 1-17 years old.
