Quick Look: Infants Born Prematurely
The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention collects information on infants born prematurity from the NFR-CRS. From 2004-2016, there have been over 145,400 child death cases reviewed and entered into the NFR-CRS by participating by teams. This Quick-Look describes over 38,600 infants born prematurely, between 20 and 37 weeks gestation, who died before their first birthday.

From 2004-2016, child fatality teams reviewed deaths of 1,479 children ages 1-14 who died in accidental fires. Fireplay was responsible for 175 (12%) of the deaths.
